MY TAKE ON THE PARK
AUTOZONE PARK IS NOT JUST A GAME, IT IS AN EVENT. FROM THE TIME
YOU WALK THROUGH THE GATE UNTIL THE END OF THE NIGHT IT IS A CONSTANT PARTY. THE MEMPHIS REDBIRDS INCORPORATE THE CITY
INTO THE BALLPARK AS WELL AS THE BASEBALL TRADITION OF THEIR AFFILIATE, THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS.
FIRST, IF YOU LIKE TO TRAVEL TO BALLPARKS, MEMPHIS IS NOT A PLACE
TO RUN TO FOR THE GAME AND GET OUT, YOU MUST STAY HERE AND ENJOY THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE. GET TO THE PARK EARLY AND PARK
AT THE PEABODY, THE PEABODY HOTEL IS THE CENTER PIECE TO EVERYTHING IN MEMPHIS. THERE IS CITY PARKING ALL AROUND THE
PARK WHICH RANGES FROM $5 - $10.AFTER YOU PARK, PICK UP A TICKET FOR THE GAME AND THEN GO GET SOMETHING TO EAT. TRY THE RENDEZVOUS
RIB PLACE LOCATED IN THE ALLEY ABOUT 2 BLOCKS FROM THE PARK. AFTERWARDS, TAKE A WALK TO THE PEABODY AND MAY CATCH THE DUCKS
AT THE HOTEL.
FROM THERE, HEAD TO THE PARK. A GRAND ENTRANCE AWAITS AND ON
A SATURDAY, THERE MAY EVEN BE A BAND PLAYING. ENTER INTO A COURTYARD TYPE AREA TO WATCH THE SHOW OR HEAD ON INTO THE
PARK. UPON ENTERING THE PARK AREA, THE MAIN CONCOURSE IS SET BEHIND THE LOWER SEATING AREA. AUTOZONE PARK ALLOWS YOU
TO WALK AROUND THE LEFT FIELD CORNER TO CENTER FIELD. LOCATED IN LEFT FIELD IS A CHILDREN'S CARNIVAL AREA, ON SUNDAYS YOU
CAN EVEN GET A HAIRCUT. BEHIND THE RIGHT FIELD FENCE IS A PICNIC AREA. PRIOR TO THE GAME, THE OUTFIELD WALL HAD
A CAMDEN YARDS LIKE CLOCK ON THE SCOREBOARD WHICH TICKS UNTIL GAME TIME.
ONCE THE GAME BEGINS, MEMPHIS DOES A MAJOR LEAGUE JOB HANDLING
THE GAME. THE LINE UPS ARE KEPT UP ALL GAME, THE SCORING DECISIONS GO UP QUICK, AND ASIDE FROM THE CHEER LEADERS, MEMPHIS
LIMITS THE PROMOTIONS. LIKE THE PARENT CARDINALS, THE REDBIRDS HAVE VERY HARD WORKING VENDORS. ALL HAVE FUN PERSONALITIES
AND ALL ARE REGULAR VISITORS. DURING A HOT SUNDAY AFTERNOON, THESE GUYS ARE A WELCOME VISITOR TO THE SEAT. IT SEEMED
LIKE THERE WERE TWO BEER VENDORS FOR EVERY SODA VENDOR, DUE TO THEIR PERSONALITIES, IT WAS AS MUCH FUN TO SEE THEM AS IT
WAS A WELCOME SIGHT.
AS FOR THE FOOD AT THE PARK, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THE BARBECUE NACHOS.
DEFINITELY NOT TO BE COMPARED WITH THE BARBECUE IN MEMPHIS, BUT VERY GOOD BALLPARK FOOD. AFTER THE GAME, STICK AROUND
FOR A POST CONCERT PARTY OR HEAD ON OVER TO THE FUN AND EXCITEMENT OF BEALE ST.
A TRIP TO MEMPHIS IS ONE WHERE YOU GO TO THE GAME AND END UP
ENJOYING THE EXCITEMENT OF THE CITY. DUE TO THE LOCATION OF THE PARK, EVERYTHING IS RIGHT THERE. ASIDE FROM THE GOOD
EATS IN MEMPHIS, JUST ABOUT 15 MINUTES SOUTH OF THE PARK IS GRACELAND, THE HOME OF ELVIS. BACK TO THE PARK, GREAT SIGHTLINES,
HARD WORKING VENDORS, AND A TOTAL RESPECT FOR THE GAME MAKE MEMPHIS THE TOTAL PACKAGE. THE ATMOSPHERE HERE MAKES
THIS ONE OF MY FAVORITE BALLPARKS.
